What is the Difference between a Vertical and Horizontal Split?
— by Tempur Blogger on Mar 25, 2020
You may have seen that we have a few different options when it comes to Split bases. We have a Split King, Split California King, King, and California King. You may be thinking, “that’s great, but the King and California King are not split.” However, they are. Our King and California King bases and mattresses are split horizontally, while our Split Kings and Split California Kings are split vertically.
Our King and California King are split horizontally to allow for easier movement into and out of your home, not only for delivery purposes, but if you decide to move homes or rooms, it will be easier to transport the base through the doorways and hallways. The dimensions if a horizontally split King are 75.5” x 39.75” for each side and a horizontally split California King is 71.5” x 41.75” for each side. This will not affect how the base operates – it will still operate as one King or California King unit, moving up and down on both sides at the same time. As far as sheets, you will still use your normal King and California King sheets. It will go on over the mattress just like normal, as it is a solid unit.
A vertically split mattress can be a great option if you and your partner have different sleeping needs. Some people prefer a firmer mattress, while their partner prefers softer; Some people prefer to be able to sleep upright, while their partner prefers to sleep flat. Whatever your needs are, a Split mattress and/or base option could be something to consider; the list goes on. A Split King is actually just two Twin Long mattresses and/or bases side by side. A Split California King will be split directly down the middle as well. The dimensions for a Split King are 37.5” x 79.5” for each side, and the dimensions for a Split California King are 35.5” x 83.5” for each side. For sheets, you will need a Split King or Split California King set. This will come with individual fitted sheets to meet the size of each side, then one flat sheet the size of the two sides together, and if you’re ordering from Tempur-Pedic, it’ll also include two pillowcases. If you prefer, for a Split King, you can order Twin Long sets of sheets, but note that it would not include the King sized flat sheet. One other thing to note is that when it comes to Split mattresses, be sure they are the same depth so you and your partner aren’t sleeping with one of you higher than the other. For example, if you want a ProAdapt Firm and your partner wants a ProBreeze Medium Hybrid, this would work, as they’re both 12” in depth. However, if you want your ProAdapt Firm and your partner wants a LuxeBreeze Firm, that would not work because the LuxeBreeze is 13”, while the ProAdapt is 12”. Lastly, if you decide down the road that you no longer want a Split set up, you can switch to a solid King or California King mattress and sync your bases to adjust as one unit. Split mattresses and bases can be a wonderful option if you want each partner to be able to have their own unique sleep experience, however you do not need to order a Split King or a Split California King if your concern is fitting the base through the doorway.
