Designed for Space, Perfected for Sleep

Winning the space race

In the 1960s, NASA scientists began working to create a groundbreaking material that would protect and cushion astronauts during space exploration. The mission of this material was two fold: absorb the extreme forces of gravity during liftoff and landing, plus provide conforming comfort to space travelers as they remained seated in the same position during long flights.

Temper material is born

The result? A viscoelastic “slow spring back foam” containing billions of open cells that were heat sensitive. This unique material responded to the body temperature of each individual, effectively reducing pressure and preventing pain, and then returned to its original shape. Throughout the 1970s, NASA used their new “Temper” technology in seat cushions for space shuttles and planes, but the still imperfect material was difficult to manufacture and lost elasticity over time.

A sleep revolution begins

When NASA released the material’s formula in the early 1980s for consumer use, our Swedish founders were eager to improve the application specifically for sleep. Scientists spent more than a decade rigorously testing and enhancing the foam to increase its adaptability, heat dissipation and durability. Finally, in 1992, the first Tempur-Pedic mattress was sold in the United States--making the dream of pressure-relieving, life-changing sleep a reality for millions of people.
